Prof. (Dr.) Chandra Shakher, currently a Professor Emeritus at Instrument Design Development Centre, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, was appointed as Chairperson of the Board of Governors (BOG) of National Institute of Technology Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh on June 28. 2018. A distinguished scholar, Prof. Chandra Shakher began his scientific/industrial career as a scientist in Central Scientific Instruments Organization, Chandigarh in 1979. From 1983 to 1989, he worked as Senior Scientific Officer and then as Deputy Manager in Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. Corporate R&D, Division, Hyderabad. He joined IIT Delhi in 1989 as Chief Design Engineer. From 1995 to 2015, he was a professor at the Instrument Design Development Centre, IIT Delhi.
Prof. Chandra Shakher has published more than 185 research papers and 05 book chapters and has 04 patents to his credit. He has been invited as keynote speaker in many International conferences/symposia held within India and abroad. Prof. Chandra Shakher’s research contributions have been on practical engineering in non-destructive testing by using laser holography, laser speckles and interferometric techniques for the measurement of flames for combustion/deformation analysis. He has successfully completed 16 Sponsored R&D projects and 18 industrial consultancy projects form various organization including BHEL, DRDO, DST, MHRD, CSIR, and other industries. Prof. Chandra Shakher was recently bestowed with LifeTime Achievement Award 2018, by Instrument Society of India, for his significant contribution to the field of holographic and speckle metrology. In 2014, international Commission of Optics honored him with the Galileo Galilei Award for his outstanding contribution to the field of holographic and speckle metrology. He has received NRDC independence award in 1993 for development of laser based alignment system for electrical power and other industries. He has done pioneering work in the measurement of temperature and temperature profile of gaseous flames using holographic and other interferometric techniques. He had made significant contribution in developing a number of technologies for industrial application including transfer of technologies.
Apart from academic contributions, he has been active in significant outreach activities as well. He is currently a Member of Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) since July 19, 2018. He is also the Chairman of the Expert Advisory Group (EAG) for Analytical, Industrial & Sensor Allied Instrumentation of Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India since Nov. 21, 2016. Previously, he was appointed as Director of National Institute of Technology Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh from 7th August, 2003 to 31th December 2004. on administrative and managerial front, as a Director of NIT Hamirpur, he has understood, analyzed improved the technical education by identifying the existing areas of development in the system. Presently Prof. Chandra Shakher has been working for bringing NIT Hamirpur on the world map through his incessant efforts.
