Mathematics & Scientific Computing

The Department of Mathematics & Scientific Computing was established as an independent entity in August 2009.Prior to that, it was an integral part of the erstwhile Department of Applied Sciences & Humanities, which was founded in 1986.Currently, the department comprises 12 dedicated and highly qualified faculty members with diverse specializations spanning: Fluid Mechanics, Solid Mechanics, Functional Analysis, Harmonic Analysis, Cryptography, Network Security, Image Processing, Operations Research, and Statistics. The department has consistently strived to provide high-quality education and research, underpinned by robust infrastructure and state-of-the-art facilities. We are proud to host a well-equipped Computational Laboratory, featuring advanced computing systems and a range of mathematical software such as MATLAB, Mathematica, MathCad, and SYSTAT, to support academic and research activities. The department currently offers the following academic programmes:

  • B.Tech. in Mathematics and Computing – a four-year undergraduate programme launched in July 2020, designed to integrate mathematical rigor with computational skills to meet the growing demands of industry and academia.
  • M.Sc. in Mathematics & Scientific Computing – a postgraduate programme aimed at equipping students with a strong foundation in advanced mathematics and its computational applications.
  • Ph.D. Programmes – research opportunities in various specializations of Mathematics and Statistics, encouraging innovation and scholarly contribution to the field.
These programmes are thoughtfully designed to prepare students for careers in research, teaching, industry, and technology, while fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and critical problem-solving skills. In addition, the department offers a range of open elective courses tailored for undergraduate and postgraduate students across engineering disciplines. With a vibrant research culture and a strong focus on innovation, the department has made significant contributions to the institute's growth, particularly in the domain of Research and Development (R&D).Since its inception, the department has played a pivotal role in promoting academic excellence and interdisciplinary collaboration. We remain committed to advancing knowledge, fostering innovation, and nurturing future leaders in mathematical sciences and computing.

Career Prospects and Industry Relevance

In the current economic landscape, career opportunities for graduates, postgraduates, and Ph.D. holders in Mathematics and Scientific Computing are exceptionally promising—both in academia and across a wide range of industries. This is a transformative era for individuals with strong mathematical and computational foundations. Degree holders in this domain are increasingly sought after in sectors such as banking, insurance, information technology, data analytics, and research & development, in addition to the ever-reliable domain of academia. Those inclined toward a research-oriented career will find ample opportunities in premier research institutions, universities, and think tanks, while those passionate about teachingcan pursue well-compensated academic positions in leading public and private institutions. Moreover, there has been a significant surge in demand for professionals who can apply mathematical modeling, analytics, and scientific computing to solve real-world problems. Financial services firms, R&D wings of multinational corporations, government agencies, and emerging tech start-ups are actively recruiting individuals with expertise in Mathematics and Computing. Backed by the department’s strong focus on both pure and applied mathematics as well as scientific computing, our students receive rigorous and balanced training that equips them with the analytical, theoretical, and computational skills necessary to excel in diverse professional arenas.
