Welcome to the department of Chemical engineering. The department of Chemical Engineering was established in the year 2013, with a mission to impart high quality engineering education and to mould the students to meet the ever growing demand of technical manpower in the area of Chemical Engineering. The department offers four years B. Tech programme in Chemical Engineering with a total intake of 60 students. The admission to the B. Tech. program is done only through the JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) main score. Department has a strong core curriculum complemented by electives in the important emerging areas of chemical engineering . The department comprises of ten different laboratories for the undergraduates catering to the needs of the curriculum. In addition, analytical instruments, computer facilities and research laboratories for the postgraduates and doctoral resources are under process. All the faculties are well dedicated to teaching and involve themselves in research in various fields of chemical engineering as well as in different interdisciplinary areas of engineering.
National Institute of Technology (former REC), Hamirpur is one of the youngest technical institute, symbiosis of academic excellence, culture, value systems amalgamated with new architectural design standing tall amongst all institutes of national importance in the northern zone of India. The department of Chemical Engineering has come in to existence in July 2013. The department endeavor towards fusion of engineering field with chemical sciences in conjunction with biological sciences and advanced materials. Department has well qualified faculty in the area of chemical engineering & sciences like bio-Chemical and bioprocess engineering, electrochemical conversion of carbon dioxide, fuel cells, synthesis and drug designing, molecular modeling, computational fluid dynamics, renewable energy, clean and green energy using polymeric membranes, desalination, industrial effluent treatment, advanced material characterization, supercritical fluid extraction, chemical process optimization, natural flavors extraction, optimization and modeling, ceramic membrane fabrication, characterization and application, clean coal technology, food Processing and so on.
The Department objective is to bring together the expertise from different domains so as to give international exposure to its students as well as faculty founded on conventional and modern tools. Likewise using modern technological tools, we believe to remain in harmony with nature by utilizing the natural resources, to develop a sustainable process as well as technology on a long term basis. To address the above said goal, interdisciplinary approach towards teaching and research is required where in faculty from the fields of chemistry, biotechnology, biological & medical sciences, information technology, nano technology, engineering, mathematics, environmental sciences and material engineering will work on national and international issues. Hence, our curriculum is designed and structured keeping all these on priority basis which directly allow the students to be in the forefront of rewarding career in the field of CHEMICAL ENGINEERING.
The department is pro-active and would like to attract talented students and teachers from diversified fields of engineering and science for M. Tech and PhD programmes to be lunched in near future.Other activities and developmental initiatives by the department: R & D developmental plans of the department: 1. Shortly the department is going to organize an industry oriented workshop by Sep 2016, for bringing out better placement related activities. 2. A short term course under TEQUIP is designed and defined, will be executed in September 2016. Training & Placement activities: There is not single chemical, design & process industries that do not employ chemical engineering graduates. Recently the department is planning to have a separate T & P cell of its own, that will coordinate with the central T & P cell of NIT, Hamirpur to gather more information, assemble Alumni data base, placement records and will communicate with different industries, R & D units, MNCs, different IITs T & P cells for bringing out better placement opportunity for the first batch of chemical engineering students at the initial level. The main responsibility of the cell will be self-awareness, career exploration and job placement. This cell will host at least one Career Fair per year to encourage all students, to prepare schedule interviews, share students resume and professional portfolio at the departmental level. In near future this cell will allow our students and alumni to network with area businesses for current and future career opportunities, part-time and full-time job opportunities, and potential internship sites. Project, consultancy & IPR cell: Plans are on foot to establish a Project & consultancy cell of the department.
The key responsibility of this cell will be to coordinate with the industries, consultancies so as to bring research proposals, consultancy works for the benefit of students. Plans are there to open an Intellectual property Rights, IPR cell. The cell will basically look after the activities related to the Intellectual Property of NIT, evaluation and filling of patents, copyrights etc in coordination with all-other departments and centers. Other developments in progress: 1. Introduction of departmental library to aesthetically provide faster e-accessibility for our student readers. 2. Introduction of two post graduate basic and advanced research labs for providing central research facility to our undergraduates, masters as well as doctoral students in collaboration with Chemistry department in the same building. 3. Construction of Hi-Tech class room, seminar room making the effective use of the departmental infrastructure and space are also proposed. 4. NIT, Hamirpur is full of natural resources, beauties so a proposal of building an eco-campus incorporating solar powered lights, air-conditioning, bio-fuels & biogas generation, treatment and reuse of gray, saline & waste water are under progress.
